Recognising and Reconstituting<i>Gàidheil</i>Ethnicity

This article analyses some claims made about the Gàidheal identity in Scotland, with particular reflection on a distinct ‘sociolinguistic turn’ within Gàidhlig studies and related research over last two decades. Through critical analysis of major sociological survey structuring various markers framing identity, normative basis is provided to then assess other classifications by academics whose work focussed single identity-marker language. It argued that predicated specific nature sociolinguistic turn fail capture complex reality living histories actual identities (and those identities), particular, socio-cultural importance place-based practices understandings. Recent proposals for ethnolinguistic assembly may enable modes articulation recognition develop which better realities, as well supporting societal linguistic regeneration among indigenous group.
